5 Steps to Detoxing Your Home

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), our homes rank among the top five environmental risks to our health. They contain a host of environmental toxins that can be found in such items as:

  • personal care products

Some of the most common symptoms of toxin buildup can include fatigue, depression, headaches, having a lack of energy, feeling lethargic, coming down with colds very frequently, brain fog, memory problems, and even balance problems and tremors.

Asthma and other respiratory challenges, allergies, autoimmune diseases, and behavioral issues can also stem from the large amount of chemicals in our homes.

So, how can you reduce the toxins in your home?

Follow these 5 steps to get started:

1. Open the windows.

Did you know that the air inside a home is five times more polluted than the outside? Your house can have more toxins and chemicals in the air than your backyard. Opening the windows is a simple way to circulate the air and reduce the amount of toxins inside.

2. Leave your shoes outside or in a specific area

Your shoes can track more than just dirt into the house. The shoes you wear outside can also bring toxins and chemicals indoors. You may want to leave your shoes outside or designate a specific area at the front of the house to keep them. You don’t want to wear your outdoor shoes through your home.

3. Start replacing your cleaning supplies

When was the last time you really looked at the ingredients of your cleaning supplies. Ever fee light headed after using them?

Try green or natural cleaning supplies. You can also make your own cleaning supplies with vinegar, baking soda, and other natural ingredients.

4. Buy some houseplants

Even NASA was on to something. Plant roots and their associated microorganisms destroy pathogenic viruses, bacteria, and the organic chemicals, eventually converting all these air pollutants into new plant tissue. Some suggested plants to start with include aloe vera, bamboo palm, and snake plant.

5. Start replacing your personal care products

Your skin is your largest organ! What are you putting on it?

There are at least 57,000 chemicals used in personal care products, and according to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, women expose themselves to an average of 168 of them every day.

How many feminine care products do you use?

Start with reading the labels on your products. How many chemicals and toxins are in your hair spray, lotion, shampoo, and other personal care items? Even your favorite perfume can be filled with toxins that stay in the air of your house. Research natural, organic, and green alternatives to detox your beauty.
